Porcelain Crowns vs. Metal Crowns

Dental crowns offer superior strength for a weakened, impaired tooth. They’re available in different materials; the most common of which are porcelain crowns and metal crowns. But which type of dental crown do you choose? If porcelain crowns are said to be aesthetically appealing, then why do some people prefer metal crowns instead? If metal crowns are durable, then why do most people nowadays sport porcelain crowns?

Metal Crowns

  •  Pros
They’re very durable and long lasting. Metal crowns can withstand biting pressures well.
Metal crowns are a less invasive option. Lesser tooth structure is removed than other types of crowns.
  • Cons
Their metallic shade is very obvious. People can easily spot the crown whenever you smile, speak or laugh.
The crown has a tendency to darken with age; thus, appearing like a decayed tooth.
They’re not a good option for patients who are allergic to metal. Eventually, metal crowns will be rejected by the gums.
After taste in most cases when eating.
Metal it’s hard to see what is under neat when taking X-rays.

Porcelain Crowns

  • Pros
They’re the most natural-looking type of crowns. Porcelain offers the same translucence as real teeth.
They’re perfect for patients who are allergic to metal. Porcelain crowns will not be rejected by the gums, so they remain stable inside the mouth.
  •  Cons
They have a shorter lifespan than metal crowns. However, porcelain crowns can last for 15 years when they’re well maintained. (Either way both need to be replace at times)
They’re also considered to be more expensive than other types of crowns – the price you have to pay for getting both functionality and aesthetics.
